WINERR_Access is denied Error

When starting Links 2003 in Windows 8/10 and you receive the error below:

ERROR : FAILED (0x80070005-WINERR_Access is denied) - CoCreateInstance(IDirectPlayLobby3A)

This generally happens in Windows 8, 8.1 or Windows 10.

Go into the Windows 8 or 10, click the start button then start typing the word “programs”
You should see an option for “Programs and Features” – click it to open it up
When the window opens, in the left menu, click on “Turn Windows Features on or off”
Scroll down until you see a folder labeled “Legacy Components” and expand it
Do you see an option for “DirectPlay”? Is it checked? If it’s not checked, check it and click Ok
Close those windows then try the game once more.
